Environment Policy
William Yule is committed to continually improving its
Environmental Performance through a process of Pollution Prevention and
compliance with appropriate legislation. The main objective is to
reduce or minimise any adverse environmental impact from our
operations. The Shareholders and Directors have agreed that environmental responsibility
is a fundamental core value of the business and that all operational decisions
must take environmental impact into account.
William Yule has long had a published environmental
policy but to ensure that environmental matters are given adequate
consideration, periodic updates of progress are to be issued and communicated
to all staff with the objective of increasing environmental
awareness.
KEY AREAS AND PROGRESS MADE TO DATE.
C.O.2 EMISSIONS
Commercial vehicles are speed restricted to 56 miles
per hour.
Defensive driver training courses are given to drivers to
improve fuel consumption.
The company will not pay for fuel when any of its vehicles
are being used for private motoring.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
We operate a presumption in favour of buying from local
sources (e.g. local SMEs are used for butcher meat, fruit
and vegetables, milk etc.)
All lighting in our depot as been changed to low energy / emission
bulbs.
All fridge and freezer motors in the depot have been changed
and operate with more energy efficient units using eco friendly
gas.
Freezer units on all new vehicles are belt driven.
All diesel vehicles now use bio diesel.
WATER CONSUMPTIONS
We have relatively low water consumption but store and
re-use rain water for washing vehicles.
PACKAGING
We re-use suppliers packaging whenever possible.
We do not repackage goods for onward sale except where Food
Safety makes this essential.
We comply fully with the Producer Responsibility (Packaging
Waste) Obligations Regulations 1995 as amended.
We are members of Waste pack UK Ltd. Compliance
System.
We regularly consult with ECOS Ltd on how to minimise
packaging further.
WASTE
We have a target of cutting the volume of waste sent to
landfill by 50% by 2011 by recycling.
We are reducing paper waste by eliminating unnecessary
printing of emails or reports which are available is soft copy form.
We encourage the use of double sided capacity in photocopying.
We are currently reviewing the electronic archiving
capability of a new computer system being introduced in 2010/11 to reduce
the output of paper reports.
RECYCLING
We have a target of 50% of all waste to be recycled by 2010.
All paper for office use is 'Treesaver' or other recycled
product.
We collect and recycle all office waste paper.
We collect and recycle all toner and inkjet
cartridges.
TRANSPORT
All new commercial vehicles are fitted with CRTs (continuously
regenerating traps), a combined catalyst and filter system that's substantially
reduces emissions of noxious particulates.
Our fleet comprises multi temperature vehicles so that
ambient, chilled and frozen goods can be made on a single delivery thus
reducing food miles.
We further aim to reduce food miles by buying from local
suppliers and manufactures where possible.
We will only tender for local contracts. This will create
less food miles than any competitor can achieve.
PLASTIC BAGS
We will not use plastic bags in packaging our products
for customers.
All refuse sacks sold by the company are environmental
friendly and will degrade within 4 years.
We work closely with all of our suppliers to ensure that all
plastic containers used to supply and store food are bio-degradable or recyclable. |
